The Secret Passage Fergus Hume Books
Most of this book I heard by means of the text-to-talk software, some I read. This is one of the few books I believe to be better read than heard in this manner (for those whose sight permits that choice). When the story is complete, one can see that it has hung on a sturdy plot-line. The style is often so meandering and dated in character as to hinder one's enjoyment. This is more pronounced with the oral device which prevents one from getting to the meat of the prose by seizing the heart of passages without the need to hear every word. The two lovers who are the heart of the problem are somewhat unbearably Victorian, the detective rather unprofessional for a police officer, and the assorted relevant characters, somewhat inexplicable in their motivations (until the puzzle is revealed completely). I never did fully grasp the relationships of some of the relevant characters nor their motivations. However, the author of the best selling detective novel of the 19th Century does give us a book which, on balance, is worth reading. Briefly, the plot concerns the death of a reclusive, elderly lady, who is aunt to the female love interest and her brother, and sister to their mother. The investigating detective is a school friend of the male love interest engaged to the female. The male love interest is a pure-bred British Gentleman, strong on sports, short on brains, impulsive in behavior. The problem would seem to be, 'who dun it'. In pursuit of a solution, we run into two women daffy about the British Gentleman, his Uncle who loved a woman who was related to most of the protagonists and who fell to her death (!!!) twenty years before, a gambling house owned by one of those who loved the Gentleman, and a bevy of others who are related in some fashion to those who enter into the action. Oh, yes, there was also a counterfeiting ring involving relatives of the protagonists some twenty years before . In other words, there is a maze from which I never actually emerged. The book is available from Kindle singly and in various package deas, costing from $0.00 to about $5.00. I cannot guess as to the nature of the audience to whom the book will appeal. I found it modestly entertaining despite my strictures.

The Secret Passage Fergus Hume Books Reviews
This interesting novel begins very refreshingly, at the end of a job interview, which the author notes wryly would have had the opposite result if either party saw the thought processes of the other. Since they didn't, Miss Loach offers and Susan Grant accepts the position of parlourmaid. Thus the many strands of an old murder (or two), a long-successful crime ring, and multiple love triangles, come together.
Unfortunately, Susan, who starts off so vividly, falls into the background to serve only as a cardboard plot device. Also unfortunately, the title of the book gives too much away.
The story is twisty, the suspects colorful, but overall it becomes a fairly standard police detection yarn.
If you like Victorian settings and characters with depth and a compelling story line this book is a satisfying read, I intend workin through all of his novels.
Very good book it keeps you interest thru out the book. I will have to read more of Fergus Hume.
It hits me as being overly contrived and convoluted without enough critical thought involved. As another reviewer noted, why would he choose this title, which is a dead giveaway? Also too many characters and events seem to be simply thrown in to advance the plot.
