When fourteen year old Robin's grandmother dies suddenly, he finds himself all alone in the world, and his future is plunged into uncertainty. Then when a strange, thin man appears on the evening of the funeral, Robin finds out he has unexpected ties to the city of Corcoran. A city he believes he has never been to before, even in his wildest dreams. The Royal City of Corcoran, or as its most commonly known, The White City, is a million miles away from Robin's simple existence in the small village he grew up in. But someone out there will stop at nothing, not even murder, to make sure Robin never makes it to Corcoran alive.

I really enjoyed the White City. Young Robin enacts on an epic, yet humorous adventure to find out who he really is. As one reviewer said, this is a coming of age adventure story. After the death of his grandmother who raised him, Robin finds out his parents weren't ordinary at all, but rather part of the fabled White City and rich. Robin himself is a sweet character, perfectly rounded with his tendency to write 'interesting' poetry. He meets a girl along the way that helps him get out of most the scrapes he gets in. I enjoyed the prose and found the book laugh aloud hilarious at times, especially on the-well I'll let you read it yourself.

My only qualm is I felt the writing was more along the lines of older children or preteens, not teenagers. I know this is a small line to some, but to others who read the genre avidly, like myself it's a big difference. The plot is very linear, there's no deep underlying twist that ties back to the beginning other than something that was a simple misunderstanding. I never quite made the connection of the mysterious 'murderer' chasing Robin that the author seemed the reader to make, I found it almost a cop-out, that the assassin simply couldn't stand the idea of not getting everyone on his list. It didn't work for me, but for a younger audience I could see it working. The protagonist is older at age 14, but still not quite mature enough for me to be considered a young adult. This is not to say I didn't enjoy reading the story, but I think it would be in a better spot in the children's section, rather than the teen section.

All in all, I say it's worth reading, and would be great for parents looking for a book for their preteen that's not quite in the dark scary world of YA but is older than elementary. I would feel comfortable recommending it to anyone that's on the reading level, unlike other novels that claim YA as their genre. I found it a light refreshing read between the darker Hunger Games and other tales of that nature. And if there are to be sequels, I would read them.

The White City edition by Gary R Crombie Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this debut YA Fiction novel, and really hope it's made into a trilogy. The characters are wonderfully unique, and the relationship between the two main characters is very sweet indeed. There are a few dark moments, and cliff-hangers throughout the story to keep you hooked, but it's the very distinctive humour that I enjoyed the most. The plot was very clever and the dialogue leapt out of the page. The author has created a vast new world which in which the story takes place, and although it's a fantasy novel, set in another time, and in a place that mirrors our own world, there was no magic or magical creatures to speak of. It was more of a coming of age adventure story. Highly recommended.
